Great Logo Design - Importance of Graphic Design Skills

January 15th, 2009 4 Comments   Posted by som

There is typically a range of specialist input required for the development of any website.  This can be particularly true when there is a need for logo design or other creative graphic design.  The reality is that even those professionals that are considered to be great web designers are not necessarily great logo/graphics designers.  Understanding the difference and recognizing weaknesses is a necessity when it comes to logo design and other creative design work.

One of the roles of a website designer is to have the skills to create an effective graphic theme for a website. Yet even the best website designer may not also be considered a skilled logo designer; it will often depend on the creative graphics ability and inherent artistic talents. In fact, a graphic designer is often needed when developing a the logo and color themes for a site and the rest of the design can be built on that foundation.

It is necessary (for both the client and the website designer) to understand the value of a creative designer or a graphic artist; not all web designers are graphic artists and sometimes it is necessary to also seek specific logo design support. This is one reason why it can be beneficial to hire a small team for your website design; it is in the best interest of your project if there are several disciplines available to meet the various demands of website design.

A logo designer will begin by listening to the client to understand the target market, initial design concepts, and the desired image to be projected by the logo. When there is no existing company logo or if a logo redesign is required as part of the overall design work then this is usually the basis of the rest of the design work.

Most often a logo needs to be multi-purpose and will be used for other image and branding purposes, from advertising to letterhead. The same usually applies to the color theme. Either the theme needs to be developed so that it can be carried into other marketing purposes or the existing themes need to be brought into the website.

A good design team will spend time researching the company, its industry, and the competition. Research is important but the real skill is in converting information to good design. Typically a designer will begin the design process either using sketches or rough cut graphic representations of a logo, using various colors and even trying different formatting styles that will become part of the websites style sheet design.

This will lead to some concept designs that can take any number of forms, depending on client requirements. When doing logo design the client will usually expect to see several options in addition to color options. It is also important that the logo can work effectively in black & white -meaning it can be copied and faxed in recognizable form. Good website designer can help the client make the best decisions for a business and the overall visual appeal of a website. Fun and funky, sleek and professional, a good visual design goes a long way to projecting the desired image and increasing the effectiveness of a website.

Please see the samples below for some of our own websites that we feel have an effective overall design. We have intentionally chosen to display the logo design and the CSS (style sheet formatting) design separately to help demonstrate the importance to the overall effectiveness. Thanks to Ko, Turk, and Jang for letting me showcase their work.

Even hiring more than one graphic designer is a good idea.. That way you get various perspectives, rather than just one. You may be able to appeal to a wider audience that way.
