10 Mistakes Web Designers Should Avoid
January 8th, 2009 4 CommentsDesigning a website requires keen attention to details as much as experience. More often than not some less-experienced web designers do some of these things which, instead of creating merits for the site, hamper the effectiveness of a website. Following is a rundown on the mistakes that web designers should avoid:
1. Frame: you used a FRAME on a website but in fact it has more disadvantages than merits. Visitors cannot bookmark your website and it´s not easy for them to print your web page. If possible, you need to avoid using a FRAME.
2. Unnecessary effects or too many multimedia technologies: most visitors are interested more in your content than in the graphics. Unless your concept is to express your designing sophistication, then it´s okay for multimedia technology.
3. Too many animations: avoid putting up too many animations or too much scroll text; these will make it more annoying to visitors than appealing in many cases.
4. Long and complex URL: if possible, you should not use a very complicated URL (for example http//www.yoursite.com/Open/xc er/store/test.php). As you see in the example, you will find a long URL and some capital text or some spacing. This is hard for visitors to remember and not very helpful for SEO.
5. Websites without stable navigation: an example is some pages that have no HOME menu. This is not handy for visitors to go back to the homepage and this will drive away your visitors from your site and it’s possible that they might never come back any more.
6. Very long web pages: according to standard statistics, visitors will not read some very long content on one page, so you need to share your contents to the other pages to keep balance.
7. Confusing layout: bear in mind that some visitors will not understand the layout as well as you do. It is wise to make a sitemap. If your websites have too many pages or complicated structure, try using a search engine on your website.
8. Many link colors: do not try to confuse your visitors by using many link colors on your page. This will make it difficult for readers to distinguish link text from normal text.
9. No new content: good and new content brings visitors to your site so you should always update your website as frequently as you can or at least once a month.
10. Slow loading: this is the case you really need to think about optimizing your graphic files and fixing your code like a JAVA script or remove something that is unnecessary. Only a few seconds behind visitor’s range of patience is a great loss for web designers.
