Eight Online Marketing Ideas for Businesses Serving a Local Area

I have heard some people question the need for having a website when the business is specific to a city or a geographic area. In truth this can be one of the more compelling reasons to have a website.

There is an increasing trend for consumers to use the Internet to find suppliers and research services. This is no longer just confined to the under 50 group either, as more and more people in all demographics are using home computers. Another interesting bit of information is that over 80% of users who are searching for local products or services will complete the transaction offline based on their online findings. If you do not have a website that can compete then you may be missing out.

The Internet is replacing the Yellow Pages as more and more people are searching for terms such as €œauto repair services Sydney€ or €œrestaurants in Calgary€. Often a local business does not need a complex or expensive website to be effective. But you should be presenting yourself well and paying attention to some important details in order to use the Internet as an effective marketing tool.

Below, I will provide Eight helpful tips for marketing your business to a local area:

1. Include address and phone number on every page. If this is so logical then why do many businesses neglect to include this important information? Probably the best place to add this contact information is on the page header or the page footer. Include your physical address or postal address and always include a phone number.

2. Us your Contact or Location page to give more details about your location. Provide directions if this will help people and include a map. Make sure the map is accurate; Google maps will serve most businesses very well. Google Maps is free and will allow you to add a business name, address, and even an image.

3. Be sure to include your location in you page titles and other site tags. In other words, optimize your keywords for a specific area. It is important that search engines can see what is happening and that you are targeting a specific area. Your site may never get good ranking for €œcakes for sale€ but you may well be first page for €œcakes for sale in Springfield€.

4. You will need to be creative if you cover an area that includes several sub-districts or a cluster of cities. Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Glendale€¦ to get attention in all these local areas will require some knowledgeable search engine optimization.

5. It is a good idea to swap links with other local businesses or non-local businesses in the same niche market. The key is to cross cultivate similar keywords and this will help raise your perceived €˜importance´ for the search engines.

6. You may already submit to local business directories. It is worthwhile to submit to all the free directories and the higher traffic pay directories. If you have an opportunity to add a link to your own website then always take advantage of this chance.

7. You may also want to consider developing a budget for pay-per-click advertising. PPC will allow you to target specific geographic area and to add location specific keywords. PPC is advertising so there is really no end to what you can spend, it is best to work with a professional that can help you find a good balance of cost and exposure.

8. A final important point is to take advantage of your online exposure to provide some compelling reason for a customer to select your business. This is where you need to use your website to sell all of your strengths and tell people of the advantages of buying their next canary or root canal from your business.

Try promotions, experiment with email marketing, send newsletters€¦ there are many things that a business can do using the power of a website. Be creative, have fun, make sure your site looks professional, and, most importantly, create a positive experience for your visitors.

For #6, Local Directories, there is a great list of local search engines, directories and data providers at http://www.emarketingmatador.com/step-2-local-search-directories.

    Hope this helps.

#3 Is the most important. You can easily rank with almost no link building efforts if you target the right terms.

I think article submission is a great way to get backlinks… we have had limited success with free article sites, too many people don’t have a clue and we see our articles posted with links back to the Free Content site ;o(
